Brewers Yeast Dog Biscuits

The yeast in these dog biscuits can help keep fleas away

MetPet.com Staff Writer and occasional biscuit nibbler

Brewers yeast is used as a natural flea-preventative.  It's yeast used by brewers in the fermentation of beer which, as far as we can tell, is where it got its name.  It is rich in B vitamins and is used as a nutritional supplement for people as well as animals.

1 cup whole wheat flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewer’s yeast
3/4 cup chicken stock
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 clove garlic minced (peel the clove, smash with the side of a knife and cut into very small pieces)

Mix the flour, wheat germ, brewers yeast and salt in a bowl.  Add in oil and garlic.  Slowly add in 1/2 cup of the chicken stock, mixing thoroughly.

Place the dough on a floured surface.  Knead by hand for 5 minutes to thoroughly combine all of the ingredients.

Roll out the dough onto a floured surface to 1/4" thickness.  At this point you can:

1. Use a cookie cutter and transfer the individually cut biscuits onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

-or-

2. Transfer the entire dough onto an ungreased cookie sheet and then use a decorative pastry wheel or knife to score lines into the dough.  We like long thin biscuits so we score the dough into strips approximately 1" wide and 6" long.   The biscuits will separate as they bake.  This method requires a longer cooking time at a lower temperature so that the interior biscuits will bake thoroughly.

Place into a 400 degree oven (reduce by at least 25 degrees if using method #2 above).  Bake for 10 minutes.  Baste with the remaining chicken stock.  Bake for an additional 10 minutes.

Turn off the oven, leave the door ajar and let dry for a couple of hours or overnight.  Eat fresh biscuits while they're fresh or store in a cookie jar or ventilated bag in the refrigerator.
