Basic Chicken Soup for Dogs

This is a great, hearty and filling soup for dogs that is terrific on its own or as a base for a variety of
vegetable and grain add-ins. It can be used as a meal or added to kibble
for more variety and palatability.
You can make this fresh once a week and store it in
the refrigerator. Or place it into an ice cube tray, freeze it, place it
into baggies and have it available to thaw and add to your dog's dinner. It can be added as a gravy to kibble or eaten on its
own.
Warm, not hot, soup is particularly nice when it is cold outside or when an
older or less robust dog has lost his appetite for hard kibble. Senior
dogs and those who have dental problems often have trouble with hard chunks of
kibble. Add a little warm chicken soup to the kibble and let stand until
the kibble is soft.

Basic Recipe
1 whole chicken with skin removed and cut into large pieces

2 large chicken breasts with skin removed, cut into large pieces
2 large carrots peeled and chopped
2 large potatoes peeled and chopped
1. Add all of the ingredients to a stock pot or slow cooker and add just enough water to cover
everything.
2. Bring to a boil over high heat, cover and simmer over very low heat for
2 hours. If the water boils off, add more hot water.
3. Remove from the stove and allow to cool completely.
4. If the chicken was particularly fatty there may be a layer of fat that can
be skimmed off the top of the cooled soup. Fat is one of the three food
groups so it is beneficial but some dogs are unable to eat large quantities of
fatty foods.
Remove the chicken from the pot
and pull all of the chicken off the bones. Discard the bones, chop or
shred the chicken and return the meat to the soup.
Optional Add-Ins:
For more variety and nutrients you can add celery, broccoli or tomatoes along
with the potatoes and carrots. You can also add cooked brown rice to the
soup after it has finished simmering. You can add uncooked brown rice to
the soup after it has reached a boil and begins simmering but rice tends to
become overly mushy.
