Kennel Cough MetPet.com Staff WriterCanine Infectious Tracheobronchitis, more
commonly known as Kennel Cough is caused by a variety of viruses and crops up where many
dogs come into close contact.  Dog shows, boarding kennels, groomers, shelters and
even a vet's office can be sources of infection.  It is caused when the upper airways
become inflamed and is generally mild.  It can, however, progress to more serious
bronchopneumonia or bronchitis in very young, very old and sickly dogs.   Kennel cough is spread through the sneezing
and coughing of infected dogs.  Unless thoroughly disinfected from surfaces, it
persists and remains infectious on doors, fences, walls and bowls.  Dogs put into
kennels can pick it up from a previous occupant.   It is characterized by a hacking, gagging dry
cough sometimes accompanied by watery eyes.  The persistent, loud cough is
uncomfortable and loud enough to keep both you and your dog awake.   It is not a
serious condition unless your dog's immune system is weak.  Rest, isolation from
other dogs, good nutrition and time (2-3 weeks) are generally all that needs to be
done.   Most kennels are routinely requiring a Kennel
Cough vaccination prior to boarding.      |
