Grooming: The classic image of a Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is that of  abundant, medium-length flowing hair that covers the eyes and forms a beard.  The image is that of a rectangular head on a rectangular body.  The maintenance of this look requires daily brushing and either professional or skillful home grooming.  Clipping the hair to a few inches all over the body and head reduces grooming requirements but loses the classic rectangular image.
Exercise requirements: Moderate to High
Aggression: Generally friendly but will bark an alarm and be a good watchdog.  Will chase small animals and cars.
Temperament: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is an affectionate, high-spirited and friendly dog.  It usually gets along with people and other pets.  It can be very rambunctious but is considered quite gentle for a terrier.  Wheatens stay energetic for most of their lives and can be too much for very small children and some seniors.
Owner requirement: Firm, strong but gentle.  Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers are sensitive and require patience and dedication to training.
Trainability Moderate
Health concerns: PLE protein-losing enteropathy (loss of protein from the intestinal tract) and PLN protein-losing nephropathy (loss of protein from the kidneys),  renal dysplasia, allergies, heart abnormalities and CHD canine hip dysplasia.
Environmental requirements: Good tolerance for moderate cold, heat and damp.  Requires good fencing as Soft Coated Wheatens can dig and wander off or chase small animals or cars.
Feeding requirements: No special requirements

The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is one of the long-legged terriers from Ireland.  It is distinguished from other terriers by its gentler disposition, sensitivity and friendliness.  It is probably the ancestor of the Kerry Blue Terrier.  As with other terriers, Soft Coated Wheatens can be willful and stubborn.  They require patience, time and attention from their owners.

Bred as all around working dogs, they are energetic but not overly so.  They need daily walks and runs in fenced areas as they tend to chase small animals, birds and cars.  They can be prone to barking and fence fighting.  Since they do not shed, they are good dogs for allergy sufferers but also require brushing and clipping to look their best and prevent mats.
