Grooming: Short, smooth coat requires minimal grooming.
Exercise requirements: Moderate.
Aggression: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier, along with its close relatives were bred to fight other dogs and can be very aggressive towards strange dogs when it feels challenged.  A well bred, well cared for and trained Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be a lively, playful, calm and docile family companion.
Temperament: The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a playful, affectionate companion.  It is generally friendly towards strange people although it can be aggressive towards strange dogs and is a fearless, tenacious fighter when aroused.  Individuals within the Staffordshire Bull Terrier breed can be stubborn and aggressive so great care needs to be taken in selecting responsible breeders for puppies with good temperament as well as physical soundness.
Owner requirement: Firm, consistent and physically strong.  Willing to provide ample training and exercise.  Willing to deal with the concerns and misconceptions of other dog owners and the general public.  Owners of Staffordshire Bull Terriers should be willing to understand the individual temperament of their dogs and be willing to provide a safe environment for play and exercise.  The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is not the breed for every family and can be too challenging for a first time dog owner.

ADBA: American Dog Breeders Association*

* The ADBA, American Dog Breeders Association has been a registry for American Pit Bull Terriers.  It opened registration to all purebred dogs from other registries in 2006.
The Staffordshire Bull Terrier along with its closest cousins the American Staffordshire Terrier (AmStaff - AKC) and the American Pit Bull Terrier (APBT - UKC) are a source of constant controversy for the general public and even amongst breed supporters.  Part of the controversy comes from the original function of these breeds as dogs that fight other dogs in dog 'pits.'  These descendants of the Bulldog became known as Pit Bulls and the name has persisted.

Today, the term Pit Bull is commonly used to describe many breeds of dogs and many individual dogs that share common physical characteristics.  They are medium sized, short legged, stocky, muscular dogs with short, smooth coats, heavy round heads and medium length smooth tails.  Enthusiasts hotly debate whether the Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be included in the Pit Bull group but the general public considers it a Pit Bull.  Historically, Pit Bulls that were aggressive towards other dogs were highly desirable but Pit Bulls that were aggressive towards humans, including their handlers, were culled.  Today, individual dogs that are not aggressive towards strange humans may still be aggressive towards other dogs.

A well bred, trained and cared for Staffordshire Bull Terrier should be a very playful, energetic and highly affectionate and trustworthy companion in the home and a well-mannered and friendly dog outside.  Individual Staffordshire Bull Terriers, regardless of the care taken for them, may exhibit aggression as a puppy or as a 1-3 year old juvenile or young adult.  They may be too aggressive to be around other dogs, particularly dogs they do not know.

It is particularly important, for the Staffordshire Bull Terrier and related breeds, to find a responsible breeder that breeds for temperament as well as sound health and physical characteristics.  It is critical that Staffordshire Bull Terriers receive appropriate socialization, particularly with other dogs.
