Kibble as treats for your dog

Making the daily kibble double as amusement

MetPet.com Staff Writer

All dogs like to have food treats during the day.  If you have an overweight or sedentary dog though it's best to lay off the high calorie snacks and feed him his regular kibble (hard pellets) dinner by hand instead.

Direct feeding improves the human and dog bond and feeding regular kibble by hand instead of in a bowl (all of it or some of it) helps prevent the weight gain that can come from excessive snacking.  Instead of inhaling the meal in a minute, your dog can enjoy leisurely crunching, enjoy your company and get a little exercise.

Here are some additional ideas to make the kibble work for your dog:

- Slide kibble along the kitchen floor to make your dog walk around the room for each bite.
- Walk up and down the yard or street while feeding small amounts to your dog.
- Hide some pieces underneath an overturned plastic flowerpot or in a hollow rubber ball specially made to insert food.  Your dog can enjoy (or be annoyed) by having to retrieve the bits as he noses the pot or the ball around.
- Make your dog work for his kibble by using the time to teach him new tricks or reinforce and perfect existing ones.
