Chinchilla Color in Cats

Cat Coat Patterns and Colors

MetPet.com Staff Writer

Chinchilla is a coat color pattern in cats where each hair has a white root and middle with a dark tip.  When the tips are black, the cat appears shimmering silver.  When the tips are brown, the cat appears golden.   Sometimes the pale roots and middle are cream and not pure white.

In the world of show cats, depending on the country and registry, there are many variations of the Chinchilla color pattern.

Blue Chinchilla Silver
Golden
Chinchilla Shaded Tortoiseshell
Chinchilla Shell Tortoiseshell
Dilute Chinchilla Shaded Tortoiseshell
Red

Smoke is a color pattern that is similar to Chinchilla.  Smoke hairs, however, are mostly dark with just the roots being pale.  Smoke cats appear dark in color while Chinchilla cats appear light in color.
