Smoke Color in Cats

Cat Coat Patterns and Colors

MetPet.com Staff Writer

Smoke is a color pattern in cats where hairs are pale at the base and gradually darken towards the tip.  The majority of the hair is dark.   Smoke cats appear to be very dark to black when not in motion.  When they move, the pale roots become visible.

In the world of show cats, depending on the country and registry, there are many variations of the smoke color pattern.

Chinchilla is a color pattern that is similar to smoke.   Chinchilla hairs, however, have more of the pale color with just the tips being dark.  Smoke cats appear dark in color while Chinchilla cats appear light in color.
